Biography
Vuokko Lahtinen is a rising Finnish conductor, whose work is defined by a commitment to inclusivity and ethical sustainability in classical music. Working across both core repertoire and contemporary music, her approach is shaped by close collaboration with musicians and a background as an orchestral player.
In the season 2025–2026, Lahtinen has made her debuts with Sinfonia Lahti and Kymi Sinfonietta as well as returns to contemporary music ensemble Tampere Raw and Ålands Symfoniorkester. The following season will include debuts with Kuopio Symphony Orchestra and Oulu Sinfonia, as well as the premiere of an opera by Heinz-Juhani Hoffmann at the Musica Nova festival in spring 2027.
In co-operation with Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt, Lahtinen will conduct professional symphony orchestras in Mainz and Göttingen as well as the Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester in Mannheim.
As a member of the Sibelius Academy conducting class, Lahtinen has conducted the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and Tapiola Sinfonietta among others.
In autumn 2024, Lahtinen was appointed chief conductor of the Polytechnic Orchestra. As a conductor, she has also been active in orchestral education by conducting the West Helsinki Music Institute Chamber Orchestra during the 2024–2025 season. In the following season 2026–2027, Lahtinen will conduct the national youth symphony orchestra Vivo and the Helsinki Strings of the East Helsinki Music Institute.
Lahtinen studies conducting at the Sibelius Academy with Professors Sakari Oramo and Susanna Mälkki, and has further developed her artistry with mentors including Anna-Maria Helsing, Jorma Panula, Christoph Altstaedt, Johannes Schlaefli, Dima Slobodeniuk and Lorenzo Coppola. Her studies have been generously supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
As a violist, Lahtinen has studied at the Paris National Conservatoire (CNSMDP) and the Berlin University of the Arts (Universität der Künste). She has worked extensively as a tutti musician and section leader in orchestras such as the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Tapiola Sinfonietta and the Finnish National Opera Orchestra.
